Liverpool’s interest in Martin Zubimendi may have faltered over the summer, but the Reds’ pursuit of a new defensive midfielder remains very much alive.
With the club exploring potential candidates for the no.6 role, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton has emerged as a notable prospect.
Reports suggest that both Liverpool and Manchester City are closely monitoring Wharton’s performances. According to Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail, the English midfielder has caught the attention of several top clubs, with Liverpool and City being among the most prominent.
“After Manchester United, City and Tottenham expressed an interest, Palace were so convinced Eze would leave that they lined up a deal for Johan Bakayoko from PSV Eindhoven as his replacement,” Mokbel reports for the Daily Mail.
“But the offers never arrived, though one more consistent season at Palace will almost certainly result in Eze moving.
“Similarly, there was tentative interest in Wharton but primarily with a view to a potential move next summer. Liverpool and City among the clubs now tracking the midfielder’s progress.”
Arne Slot and Liverpool still on the lookout for a new no.6
Despite not making a move during the recent transfer window, Liverpool’s interest in Wharton underscores their ongoing search for a long-term solution in the defensive midfield position.
The 20-year-old, who joined Crystal Palace from Blackburn Rovers in a deal that could rise to £22 million, has shown promise since his arrival at Selhurst Park.
Palace had been preparing for the potential departure of Eberechi Eze, lining up PSV Eindhoven’s Johan Bakayoko as a replacement.
However, Eze’s departure did not materialise, and the focus shifted back to maintaining their current squad. Similarly, while interest in Wharton was noted, it was largely speculative, with serious offers expected to surface next summer if his performances continue to impress.
Liverpool’s current midfield setup includes Ryan Gravenberch, who has integrated well into Arne Slot’s squad.
Despite Gravenberch’s solid performances, Liverpool are keeping their options open for future signings.
Wharton’s development is particularly intriguing, as he represents a potential future anchor in the midfield, combining both defensive solidity and the ability to control the game from deep.
As Wharton continues to make strides at Crystal Palace, the interest from Liverpool and Manchester City indicates a growing recognition of his potential.
With both clubs tracking his progress, the midfielder could be a key target in next summer’s transfer window, should he maintain his upward trajectory and continue to develop into a top-tier defensive asset.
