Fabrizio Romano previously reported that Liverpool hold an interest in signing Renato Sanches as well as saying he’d be a good fit for Jurgen Klopp.
It’s been great to watch him in a more advanced role for Holland this summer but Georginio Wijnaldum’s Anfield exit means that a new midfielder is on Liverpool’s transfer shortlist.
The Reds have been linked with the likes of Bissouma, McGinn, Tielemans and Neuhaus but signing each player comes with a set of challenges.
Sanches’ history with Liverpool
Sanches would be an interesting target and it’s not the first time he has been linked with a move to Merseyside but after what can be described as a turbulent start to his career, he is maturing as a footballer.
Speaking on the Here We Go Podcast in January, Fabrizio Romano said: “Pay attention to Renato Sanches. Next summer he will be on the market and Liverpool are looking at him.
“There is nothing advanced yet but they are looking at him as an opportunity. He’ll be a main target for top clubs and also for Liverpool.”
In a chat with the Anfield Watch back in January, Romano added that he thought Sanches would suit Liverpool down to a tee and matched the profile of player they typically pursue.
After calling the Portuguese an ‘interesting option, he clarified his point saying: “When I say interesting I mean something like Diogo Jota. Not a big name, obviously, not the most exciting when you sign this player but when you go on the pitch and see the player, you like him.
“Liverpool are looking at these kinds of opportunities and they think they have this kind of opportunity to sign this kind of player again next summer.
“Young one with good experience, ready to be a starter. I mentioned Renato Sanches. In my opinion, Renato Sanches would be a top deal for Liverpool.”
Liverpool reached an agreement with Lille in January, according to Tutto Mercato Web, but a move never materialised but now could be his chance to move to Anfield.
Romano foreshadowing hands Liverpool boost
With the Italian journalist underlining the reasons why the 23-year-old would be a great fit for Liverpool, he’d make a terrific replacement for Wijnaldum.
The former Bayern Munich and Swansea City midfielder has all the tools necessary to be an incredible player under Jurgen Klopp.
He’s very fast, has great tight control and can dribble past his man with relative ease, is defensively sound and like the Dutchman he would be replacing, he’s very press resistant.
The major concern I have with signing him, even if it only cost the £27m that Transfermarkt claims he is worth, is that his injury record is as bad as Naby Keita’s.
Since joining Lille in 2019, he has suffered eight injuries which forced him to miss a total of 163 days and 26 games over two seasons.
Now, Portugal’s EURO 2020 star is still only 23 and there is a lot of time for him to overcome his injury problems but given the issues Liverpool have recently had with injuries, it could be a major risk signing him.
Especially when you consider how fit Wijnaldum is and how much he played for the Reds as a result.
Liverpool could sign a player in Sanches capable of reaching much greater heights than the 30-year-old but it’s a risky move.
