Andrew Robertson revealed he had been struggling with an injury that he played through the end of last season with. The Liverpool defender also carried the injury to EURO 2024.
The fullback had an up and down campaign last year, with fans often complaining that his level had dropped in recent seasons. Robertson only managed to start 18 Premier League games last season. The Scottish defender made 29 starts in the previous two campaigns. Robertson didn’t even feature much in Liverpool’s pre season, and only lasted 79 minutes in the Reds’ opener against Ipswich Town.
Andrew Robertson playing through pain barrier
In the interview, the Scotland captain says he ended last season playing through the pain from a previous injury issue. He also revealed that he played with the pain at EURO 2024 for Scotland.
“I felt really good today all things considered,”
“I was playing in pain from March onwards and obviously it was a really important time for club and going into a really important time for country.
“I hoped that the three weeks off would settle things down but it didn’t and it needed a bit longer. I managed to get my fitness up to a really good level without being with the team which was really frustrating but I made sure I was in America.
“I was asking the coaches questions and trying to learn when I couldn’t be on the pitch and then that would put me in the best shape possible. There’s still lots to learn for all of us — it’s a completely new philosophy and it will take a bit of time.”
Question marks over long term fitness
Andrew Robertson admitted that the three weeks off after EURO 2024 didn’t help his fitness and recovery. Liverpool fans will not be keen on those words as they head into a new season with him as first choice left back.
At 30-years old, Robertson isn’t getting any younger and his backup is 28-year old Tsimikas. Liverpool might have to start looking at replacements for Robertson who has been a great servant to the club.
The Scotland captain joined the Reds from Hull City in 2017, and went from a team that was relegated to playing for one of the best teams in England. Robertson was a key player under Jürgen Klopp as Liverpool lifted the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and EFL Cup among other numerous titles.
The left back’s contract expires in 2026, which gives the club enough time to sell him and fund a new starter in his position down the line. Robertson is not the only player at Liverpool whose deal runs out soon, Virgil Van Dijk recently hinted at leaving the club in the coming months.
