Real Sociedad boss makes Liverpool admission amidst Martin Zubimendi saga

Liverpool’s interest in Martin Zubimendi last summer was well-documented and their failure to eventually sign him was roundly criticised. The Reds went all-in for him but were left shocked by the player’s decision to stay put at Real Sociedad.

The Spain midfielder has continued to perform at the top level for Sociedad and is still considered one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe who is not playing for one of the elite teams.

I recently watched Zubimendi in action and came to the conclusion that Liverpool dropped the ball by failing to take their interest to the logical conclusion in the summer transfer window.

The Spaniard has said very little to suggest that he is prepared to leave Sociedad any time soon but there are suggestions that Liverpool have continued to keep tabs on him.

He has also been linked with a move to Manchester City who are almost certain to sign a number 6 in the winter transfer window due to Rodri’s injury.

Zubimendi was in brilliant form over the weekend when his side beat La Liga leaders Barcelona 1-0 at the Anoeta.

The Spaniard was the anchor in the middle of the park as he controlled the game with his passing and game awareness as Real Sociedad halted the Barcelona juggernaut.

He won seven duels, made four clearances, two tackles and four recoveries to repel a dangerous Barcelona attacking line.

The midfielder completed 81 percent of his passes, three of which were in the final third.

Sociedad boss Imanol Alguacil admitted that Barcelona are probably the most in-form side in Europe along with Liverpool and his team competed with them throughout the 90 minutes.

“We were very daring, but not only until the 20th or 30th minute, but I would say until the 90th”, he said.

“We played against the team in the best form in all of Europe along with Liverpool. Also, I have to remember here that Barça, a team that is in great physical form, has had one more day of rest than us.”

Zubimendi’s performance against a top team will again reopen the debate about whether Liverpool should try to sign him in the winter window.
