Confirmed: David Coote Liverpool decision likely wrong

The David Coote controversy involving the Professional Game Match Officials Board, Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp has plunged the referees in England into a crisis.

A video on social media emerged on Monday where Coote was seen abusing Liverpool and Klopp and appeared to be refereeing a game in July 2020 between Liverpool and Burnley.

The now-suspended Premier League referee called Liverpool ‘s***’ and Klopp a ‘c***’ and this has caused a major row as Reds fans rage against the perceived biases of the 42-year-old.

Klopp indirectly criticised the referee last season when he was on VAR duty and decided against giving a penalty to Liverpool in a 1-1 draw against Arsenal at Anfield.

However, his recent performance in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa has also come under the scanner despite the comfortable way the Reds won at Anfield on Saturday night.

David Coote made a key decision wrong

Darwin Nunez gave Liverpool the lead in the 20th minute from a rapid counter-attack but former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher claimed that Villa’s Leon Bailey should have been sent off for fouling Mohamed Salah in the build-up.

The Jamaican winger clipped the Egyptian when he was through on goal and the ball fell to Nunez who smartly finished around Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

The goal meant Liverpool took the lead and their complaints were muted but Gallagher insisted that it was a clear foul and a red card and Coote was saved by the fact that the Reds didn’t care after they scored.

“I will have to, not break my golden rule, I will have to tell you, if I was the referee, the minute Salah got clipped, I’d have blown my whistle. I think if I blow my whistle, I’m in control of my decision and I can justify stopping the game, I’m sending him off because I think it’s a foul”, Gallagher said on Sky Sports.

“What I think is interesting, the angle behind the goal, watch the referee, he does not think it is a foul for whatever reason and he does not play advantage, he says no foul twice. The interesting thing, that saves his grace, not only the goal but if Martinez knocked the ball out of play, the VAR would have been able to recommend a review.

“I’m not saying they would’ve suggested a red card but they would’ve been able to recommend a review but by saying no foul, the VAR could’ve said, ‘you need to go look at this because we think it’s a foul’, and could’ve sent him off. If he plays advantage, he quite clearly said no foul, the VAR cannot overrule it.

Can you name the club Liverpool sold these players to?

“I avoid at all points, hypothetical questions, if that was me, when Salah got clipped, I would’ve hit my whistle. I think from his angle, it’s a foul, the forward is in such an ascendancy, he has no reason to go down.

“Safest option for me is whistle, it’s a red card and everyone will back off, they got a goal which saved him and for whatever reason he said no foul which was his parachute.”
