Ian Wright reveals Liverpool's midfield problem - claims they 'struggled' against Palace

Ian Wright has come out to claim that Liverpool's midfield struggled against Crystal Palace in their 1-1 draw last night.

The Reds came from behind to salvage a draw thanks to Luis Diaz who cancelled out Wilfried Zaha's opener.

With 10 injury casualties at the moment, Liverpool are short across the pitch but none more so than in midfield.

Former Arsenal striker Wright claimed that without Thiago Liverpool 'struggled' despite a good showing from Harvey Elliot.

Liverpool's midfield 'struggled'

The issue for Liverpool was no penetration or creativity from midfield - which was clear to see according to Wright without Thiago:

"Getting the ball through midfield, I think they’re struggling with that. Harvey Elliott didn’t have any space to really move in," he told the Liverpool Echo, as quoted by AW on Twitter.

"To try and move the ball into areas where they can commit players in the middle and force their way in. Everything of Liverpool has to go out wide. Without Thiago, we see when Thiago’s not playing they’re not as potent.

"They need that midfielder to get the ball into areas where they commit players. That’s what they missed tonight.”

The Reds are currently without Thiago, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The likes of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson seem to be out of form whilst Harvey Elliot and Fabio Carvalho are both incredibly young and 36-year-old James Milner is obviously not the player he was.

Question marks have always been around Liverpool's midfield and the lack of contribution to the team, but under Jurgen Klopp their job isn't to score goals but to facilitate and help manage the system.

But on nights when teams come organised, you need something different and that's what Liverpool don't currently have. This could cost Liverpool success this season due to their reliance on their front three.
