"If Liverpool can get a sensible deal done": Glen Johnson hopes Jurgen Klopp can complete swoop for £63million attacker

Liverpool have been urged to find a "sensible" way to sign Serge Gnabry after it was reported the Bayern Munich star is a summer target for the Reds.

Goal claimed at the start of the month that the German is an option for Liverpool if Sadio Mane leaves the club in the summer with his contract on Merseyside set to expire in 2023.

He's reportedly worth £63million and while Gnabry has just 15 months left on his own contract, Liverpool might struggle to get Bayern Munich to agree to a cut-price deal.

They already poached Thiago Alcantara for £25million when the Spaniard had a year left on his deal but it was a different scenario. Gnabry is younger than his former teammate was when he left the Allianz Arena and not as injury-prone given the discount the Reds secured.

“I think if Liverpool can get a sensible deal done for Serge Gnabry then it would be worth doing," Johnson said.

“I don’t know what his contract situation is but if there’s a chance you could do a clever deal without a crazy transfer fee then he’s certainly got the ability to enjoy the Premier League.

“Obviously they’ve got fantastic players in that position, but the more you sign players like that, the more it brings out of everybody else.”

Liverpool have some of the smartest people in the transfer business behind the scenes and while it's yet to be reported that Mane could leave this summer, his replacement being Gnabry would be a bit odd.

Since Luis Diaz arrived, Mane has split his game time between left-wing and striker while Bayern Munich boss, Julian Nagelsmann, deploys Gnabry on the right-wing predominantly.

If anything, he'd be a more natural replacement for Mohamed Salah while the Reds would be better poaching Robert Lewandowski from the Bavarians although it's already been reported that talks have been held with the Polish forward but he looks as though he could join Barcelona.
