"He gets caught ball watching" Rio Ferdinand calls out Liverpool defender's mistake that led to Ajax goal

Liverpool beat Ajax 2-1 at home to get their first three points of the UEFA Champions League.

Despite the good result, former Manchester United defender and BT Sport pundit, Rio Ferdinand, was not happy with the goal Liverpool conceded.

Ajax scored through a wonderful Mohammed Kudus strike, but it was their only shot on target the whole match.

It was a very good goal by Kudus but Rio Ferdinand thinks Trent Alexander-Arnold should've done better defensively.

He told BT Sport live on air: “Trent has to see that run. He gets caught ball watching and any mistake at the moment they’re getting absolutely punished.”

Trent has had a relatively slow start to the season, just like the rest of the team. He's always been criticised for his defensive side of the game, but this season's comments are happening every week.

He has looked sluggish at times, not showing much desire to get back to the ball quickly.

Rio Ferdinand continued and said that he knows Trent is capable of being a great defender and needs to show it.

He said: "I've watched him shut out top wingers in Champions League so he's got it in his locker".

Does Trent need competition?

Kostas Tsimikas stepped in today as Andrew Robertson was injured. He played excellently and many fans are urging Jurgen Klopp to give him a proper run as a starter. Maybe that's what Trent needs.

For so long, he's been the only right-back and there's no backup to provide him with any competition.

Calvin Ramsay signed this summer but hasn't been available for selection at all due to injuries. Ramsay might prove to be worthy competition to Trent but it will take time for him to return and prove himself.

We are still unsure when Calvin Ramsay will be able to return to training, but we hope to see some signs of the new signing soon enough.
