Liverpool could still reach agreement to keep silky £22M player who is out of contract next summer

Liverpool could still renew the contract of Naby Keita whose contract is up at the end of the season.

The Reds may still offer Keita a new deal, according to reports, despite his injury issues.

Alongside Keita, James Milner, Roberto Firmino and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain both are out of contract next summer and the Reds could be three midfielders down if none have their deal renewed.

However, one report has claimed that Keita's future is very much up in the air and that he could still see his deal renewed.

The Naby Keita contract situation

According to the Mirror, Liverpool are still considering whether to give a new deal to Keita, as his deal runs out next summer. Compared to Milner and Chamberlain, Keita is still only 27 and has had good runs in the team in the last season or two.

However, they have been few and far between because of his extensive list of injuries and the higher-ups will be debating that decision.

Clubs have registered an interest in the Guinean international - his old club RB Leipzig had enquired over the summer. However, I'm sure the Reds would love to swap an injury-prone Keita for a younger and durable Konrad Laimer - who's deal also runs out next summer.

For Liverpool to completely revitalise their stale midfield, it means letting go off the past and the trio of Milner, Chamberlain and Keita are certainly players who Liverpool could upgrade on.

Pundit and former PL player Paul Merson weighed in claiming Keita is just simply not being good enough for Liverpool at the moment.

He said: “Naby Keita’s signing didn’t really do much for me. I was a bit shocked when they brought him on in the Champions League final. Liverpool needed a goal, and he’s scored one goal in about a million games."

Re-signing Keita for two or three more years as he nears 30 seems like an awful football decision and if they want to create a more durable midfield for the future, then Keita can easily leave.

At the time of writing, Keita is currently injured and could be out for a lengthy spell (once again) it seems more and more unlikely that a new deal will be offered looking from the outside.
