Soul-crushed Liverpool star reveals broken promises after a nightmarish 2020/21 season
Loris Karius has revealed how promises were broken by Union Berlin and how he hopes to prove his worth after a nightmarish 2020/21 season.
It's difficult to believe that the German is now 28 after he was signed by Liverpool in 2016 from Mainz for a fee worth around £4.7million.
He arrived at Anfield as a 23-year-old with a lot of promise and Liverpool fans will remember how good he was in the buildup to the Champions League final in Kiev where the world came crashing down around him.
His mistakes in the 3-1 final defeat seem like a decade ago but in the three years since Real Madrid soundly beat the Reds, in the Champions League final, Karius' career has taken a nosedive.
He was given a standing ovation by Liverpool supporters in his first pre-season game after the final but has since gone out on loan to Besiktas and Union Berlin.
The latter seems to have broken promises to the goalkeeper and he has spoken publicly about his nightmarish 2020/21 season in an interview with BILD.
This season, he played a total of five games for just 381 minutes.
He said: “Of course, when I moved, I was told that I would play, otherwise I wouldn’t have come either. We looked each other in the eye at the end of the season and shook hands.
“Everyone told me that I was incredibly important to the team and that they were sorry how it went. But when you look at it all, it was certainly not exactly fair. Simply because of what was shown to me in advance.
“I want to prove something to myself and the people. I am extremely hungry and motivated.
“As of now, I’ll be at Liverpool on July 12th. There is still a lot going on at the moment. Because of the European championship and corona, the transfer market will pick up rather late. I’ll keep everything open and will make the right decision for myself.”
“It is important to me that it fits. The club has to be up for it, I have to be up for it and the coach has to be up for it.
"Last year taught me again that you have to exchange ideas intensively with those responsible and that you really have to pay attention to your intuition.
“I don’t know if it has to be something completely exotic. But [a move to] Spain, Italy – I can already imagine something like that, if it fits.”
Liverpool's first choice 'keeper is unquestionably Alisson while contract extensions for Kelleher and Adrian show that there is no room for Karius to remain at Anfield beyond pre-season.
