Liverpool can rub salt into Barcelona's wounds by finally signing €60m attacker

Liverpool can rub salt into Barcelona's wounds after PSG poached Georginio Wijnaldum by signing Ousmane Dembele for around €60million.

Spanish news publication SPORT reported in April that Barcelona are prepared to cut their losses on Ousmane Dembele and will let him leave for between €50m and €60m and this could be a good opportunity for Liverpool.

This week, however, Goal reports that Barcelona wants to renew his contract and the Reds should turn his head with an offer in the same week that the Catalonians had Georginio Wijnaldum poached from them by PSG.

The Anfield side could rub salt into Barcelona's wounds in a fortune reversal following the La Liga outfit's annoying trend of stealing Liverpool players over the years.

Javier Mascherano, Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho all left the club for greener pastures and while the latter has seen his career take somewhat of a nosedive since, Liverpool are now one of the best teams in the world and should act like it in the transfer market.

While Dembele has struggled with injuries, a change of scenery and the opportunity to play under Jurgen Klopp could reignite his career.

It is important to note that he is still young enough, having recently celebrated his 24th birthday.

So there is still plenty of time for him to overcome his fitness issues. He can still become the world-class player that he was tipped to become.

It is a risk, but if Klopp and Michael Edwards see it as one worth taking, then it probably is worth taking. They previously tried to sign him on loan, making a loan offer with the option to buy to bring him to Anfield last summer which was rejected.

He could provide cover for the current front three while he adapts to his new club, before taking over for years to come.

He is ambidextrous and is equally adept on both wings.

Equally comfortable on his left and right foot, he’d be able to slot in whenever required. He also provides a perfect option to come in if Klopp decides to play in a 4-2-3-1 as he has on occasion.

Dembele has improved his fitness this season, only missing a handful of games and this has seen him improve his form. In all competitions this season, he scored 11 goals and assisted five.

John Barnes has also urged Liverpool to sign Dembele telling Bettingodds.com: "As far as Jadon Sancho is concerned, out of the clubs interested in him I’d say that Manchester United is probably the best destination for him.

“At Liverpool, I’d prefer a much more direct player. Jadon is very skilful and very tricky, but I believe that Ousmane Dembele would suit Liverpool out of all the potentially available players in that position.”
