"I believe": Fabrizio Romano reports on the future of Anfield duo and explains what Liverpool "wanted to" do

Two of Liverpool's players could have left this summer and are expected to both re-evaluate their futures with the club next summer.

The Reds had a busy summer transfer window which saw them do dealings with players coming in and out of the club.

However, there was more business that could have been done with two of their midfield roster.

Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could have both left the club this summer and they're being backed to do so next summer.

Football journalist Fabrizio Romano has entertained that idea - and given the issues with injuries, it may become a reality.

Romano on Keita and Chamberlain

Reports have begun to spread out following both of their omissions from Liverpool's Champions League squad for the group stages.

Given that both of their injuries will see them out for at least another two months, it was unlikely that either would be available for selection anyway. It was purely a fitness issue and they can be re-added back in for the knockout stages if needed.

Even before that news, according to Romano - "I believe that next summer both players will evaluate their future."

He added: "Keita has already had opportunities in the summer, but Liverpool wanted to keep him because Klopp considers him an important player in the rotations."

West Ham had made a 'soft inquiry' for Chamberlain this summer, but once the extent of his hamstring injury was revealed, they decided against a move for him.

Whereas Keita was linked with a move back to RB Leipzig, his former club, again a similar situation arose. With the club heavily linked to move for Jude Bellingham and Moises Caicedo, as well as Arthur Melo a potential signing for next summer depending on his loan move, it makes more and more sense that one or both will leave next summer.
