"He's certainly a goalkeeper that should be a No.1" Former Liverpool player praises £6,000/week backup

Former Liverpool player, Robbie Keane, spoke very highly of backup goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher in a recent interview with Liverpool FC. He said, "He's certainly a goalkeeper that should be a No.1 but when you've got a world-class keeper in front of you like Alisson, he'll just have to bide his time."

The Irish goalkeeper has definitely impressed when given the chance in the first team, deputising as a very reliable No.2. He played a big part in Liverpool's Carabao Cup win last year over Chelsea. Kelleher miraculously kept a clean sheet and even scored the winning penalty.

The 23-year-old is definitely a top talent, but his chances on Merseyside are limited with a world-class goalkeeper ahead of him in the pecking order. Alisson Becker still has a long-term contract with the Reds, seeing him at the club until 2027. So, it might be a very long time before Kelleher can become the No.1.

Keane continued, "I've definitely been impressed with Caoimhin, just the way he plays – how comfortable, how calm he is in possession of the ball, he has a real presence about him. As I said before, if he didn't have someone like Alisson in front of him, you'd imagine he possibly could be No.1."

Last season, Kelleher was been given the opportunity to start during cup games and we might just have to wait until then to see him in action. The Irish keeper has been injured all season but he might be available for the first Carabao Cup match against Derby County on the 9th of November.

Injury Update

There is no official return date for the young keeper. However, Republic of Ireland manager, Stephen Kenny told the Independent.ie this, “He got injured in training when he went back. He’s nearly back. It’s unfortunate for Caoimhín.”

Hopefully, we'll get to see Kelleher playing for Liverpool soon enough.
