"Machine" Szoboszlai's elite Anfield performance vs. Aston Villa

Dominik Szoboszlai was utterly brilliant for Liverpool during their 3-0 win over Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Not only did the Hungarian score a wonderfully struck goal after just three minutes, he was tidy in possession, energetic and willing to fight for a clean sheet.

Aston Villa are by no means a weak team either. Unai Emery has assembled a side full of quality that is tactically astute but they couldn't handle the Reds at Anfield.

Liverpool constantly found space in midfield and behind Villa's defence although it's prudent to say that although brave, it's always unwise to play a high line against Jurgen Klopp's side.

The German deployed Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah in attack - an attacking trident that is arguably the most aggressive with their runs in behind.

Szoboszlai, however, was vital to the game plan. His combination of neat passing under pressure and ability to burst past his marker meant that alongside Curtis Jones and Mac Allister, the Liverpool midfield was extremely effective.

With Ryan Gravenberch yet to start after he wasn't registered in time for the Villa game, it's safe to say last season's weak midfield is a thing of the past.

What did Jurgen Klopp have to say about Szoboszlai?

Speaking to Liverpool's official website after full-time, Jurgen Klopp was effusive in his praise of Szoboszlai.

“A machine, huh? That’s now all four games,” said Klopp.

“Pretty impressive, absolutely impressive. Tactically smart, absolutely ready for the dirty part of the game – meaning hard work where it’s not the fancy stuff where they are shooting, crossing, running forward, stuff like this. No, he is really closing down opponents.”

“So important how Curt and Dom defended the half-spaces next to Darwin, super-important.

"And what a goal! I saw it directly from behind. That was the cleanest strike I saw for a long time. And that was his slightly lesser-good foot. That was, again, a top performance.”

Szoboszlai has long been a player that Klopp and Liverpool have admired and while he may have needed time to mature in the Bundesliga, the 22-year-old is already one of the most impressive midfielders in the Premier League.

Data from WhoScored paints an exciting picture for fans as it begins to sink in that the Hungarian is now a Liverpool player ready to take the league by storm.

The former RB Leipzig midfielder completed 91% of his passes, finding the mark with 51 of his 56 attempts to find a teammate.

In fact, Liverpool's passing accuracy was 91% as well with only Alexis Mac Allister and the starting attackers failing to register a pass completion rate above 90%.

It's safe to say that we're set for a season of enthralling attacking football from the Reds once more.
