Liverpool’s star man eyes up two Champions League records – could overtake Liverpool legend

Liverpool stats Mohamed Salah

Mo Salah could set Champions League record as he aims to write himself into the record books once again for Liverpool.

The Reds begin their group stage campaign tonight away at Napoli, at a stadium where they’ve lost their last two games at.

Also in their group are Ajax and Rangers, who face off in the early kickoff. Liverpool made it six wins out of six last season – becoming the first English club to do so.

Now the Egyptian has the chance to break two records to add to his long list of achievements already at the club.

What records can Salah break?

In the Champions League last year, Salah managed seven goals in the group stages – that’s a figure beaten only by Manchester United’s Ruud Van Nistelrooy who is currently the highest scoring player in the UCL group stages whilst playing for a PL team.

That was back in the 2004/05 campaign and Salah pushed him close with seven goals in what was considered the ‘group of death’ of last year’s campaign as Liverpool faced AC Milan, Porto and Atletico Madrid.

Whilst that record may prove difficult, one record he can break soon is the highest number of assists in the UCL from a Liverpool player.

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has the record with 12 and Salah is just one behind – a record that could be broken across the six group games.

What records does he already hold?

Salah already has the most goals scored in a 38-game PL season with 32 during his debut season in the 2017/18 season. Although that could be lost given the way that Erling Haaland has begun this season.

He’s currently the highest-scoring African in PL history as well and scored in ten consecutive games last season – making him the first man to achieve the feat in Liverpool’s 129-year history.

Also, when he scored Liverpool’s goal at Old Trafford a few weeks back, he became the first Reds player to score in four consecutive games at Old Trafford.

He also loves an opening day goal – his effort against Fulham on August 6th saw him tie as the player with the most goals on the opening weekend of the PL.

There are almost too many to mention, but here are two more; he also holds the record for most teams scored against and most games scored in, in one season (18 and 24 respectively) and he will be eyeing up a record on the European stage this season.
