Liverpool won their first UEFA Champions League game of the season against Atlético de Madrid. The game ended 3-2 as skipper Virgil van Dijk made sure that the Reds don’t miss three points while playing at Anfield.
The Merseysiders had taken an early lead in just under six minutes as Mohamed Salah was a direct or indirect perpetrator in both goals.
The Egyptian first took a free-kick, which hit Andy Robertson as the ball deflected into the Madrid post. Salah didn’t stop there as the winger scored another in just under two minutes, giving Liverpool a two-goal lead.
However, Marcos Llorente didn’t give up as the Spaniard managed to pull one back during injury time before the second half. Llorente didn’t stop as an 81st-minute volley meant Simeone’s men were back into the game.
But just like always, the Reds escaped a loss again when Van Dijk scored the winner in injury time. Things got tense, though, as the Dutchman’s celebration wasn’t the only focus after the goal.
Diego Simeone was given a one-match ban after the Anfield incident

On the other side of the pitch, Atlético de Madrid manager Diego Simeone was in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. The Argentine manager had gotten into a clash with a Liverpool fan.
The stewards rushed to the spot and broke up the clash. Many fans can be seen signalling insults at Simeone in the photos circulating online.
The Rojiblancos manager talked with the fourth official. However, he didn’t expect what came next as a red card was shown, forcing him off the pitch.
Now, UEFA has banned Simeone from managing Madrid’s home game against Eintracht Frankfurt today. It will be held at the same time Liverpool face Galatasaray in Turkey.

Liverpool face a fine following fan behaviour
Simeone wasn’t entirely at full fault in the incident. The Argentinian claimed that he was insulted throughout the full 90 minutes by the Reds fans.
One specific fan highlighted was Jonathan Poulter. The Englishman is a former bannee who faced a three-year suspension from football.
It was after his actions in Steven Gerrard’s last game at Anfield that led to the decision. Simeone claimed that the insults continued following Van Dijk’s winning goal, and that’s when he snapped.
He apologised for his behaviour, but also focused on how any person would be angry in such a situation. UEFA has also fined Liverpool £3,492 as fans threw multiple objects towards the manager.
