Arne Slot has stamped his authority on Liverpool and his team have lost just one game in all competitions thus far this season.
Liverpool sit at the summit of the Premier League table and their 4-0 demolition job of Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen burnished their Champions League credentials on Tuesday night.
However, there was scepticism at the start of the season around Slot as he was unproven beyond the Netherlands and Feyenoord weren’t even the biggest Dutch club in his homeland.
There were expectations that the Dutchman would need some time to adapt to English football and patience would have to be shown as he gripped with the idea of managing one of the biggest clubs in England.
Slot was also not seen as the top target by people outside Liverpool as the club’s interest in trying to snare Alonso away from Leverkusen was well-known.
Liverpool have maintained that the former Feyenoord was always their top pick but many were unconvinced.
Gary Neville angered people inside Anfield
The former Manchester United captain had a tense relationship with Liverpool fans during his playing career and there has been no love lost since his retirement.
Despite being one of the most prominent pundits in English football, his comments are often taken with a pinch of salt on Merseyside due to his Manchester United affiliations.
The former defender claimed on September 2nd that Slot was never the top target for Liverpool and was probably third choice.
He said: “Liverpool couldn’t find manager first, second or third [choice].
“Well, they didn’t want Arne Slot probably.
“They didn’t think he was a guarantee to take on like Erik ten Hag.”
This didn’t go down well inside Anfield and according to the Daily Telegraph, they were left fuming by those comments.
Can you name the team Liverpool sold these players to?
Liverpool considered demanding a formal apology from Neville for making those comments about their pursuit of Slot.
However, the club never really made an official remark despite their anger towards the former defender.
Alonso’s Leverkusen were demolished by Slot’s team and it remains to be seen how Ruben Amorim, perceived as the second choice, does when he brings his Manchester United team to Anfield later in the season.
