Steven Gerrard has not been at Liverpool for close to a decade. However, he has remained the standard that every young midfielder at Anfield is compared to.
The former England star never won the Premier League as a player but is considered an icon and a club legend by Liverpool fans far and wide.
Gerrard made 710 appearances for the Merseyside giants, scoring 186 goals and registering 155 assists and won the Champions League amongst other honours at Anfield.
Liverpool have been looking for the next Gerrard since he left in 2015 and while there have been some great midfielders, no one has come close to making the impact he had on the team.
However, there are now suggestions that the former midfielder could have coached his successor when he was in charge of the Liverpool Under-18s.
Curtis Jones – The next Steven Gerrard
Jones worked under Gerrard in the Liverpool Under-18s and the young midfielder is coming into his own this season.
The 23-year-old midfielder was brilliant in Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen at Anfield on Tuesday night and registered an assist.
His performances have been getting better this season and he has been playing at a top level consistently since the start of the campaign.
Jones’ ability to score and create from midfield is getting compared with how Gerrard used to inspire the team from the middle of the park.
By the time he was 23, Gerrard was an established England international but Jones has yet to make his debut for the Three Lions.
Can you name the team Liverpool sold these players to?
However, Liverpool are convinced that Jones is on the way up and will soon get his England bow as well.
There are concerns that his style of play could lead to injuries but Liverpool hope that he is going to get better in the coming years.
Liverpool fans have seen false dawns when it comes to looking for the new Gerrard but Jones is now being seen as the real deal.
