Arne Slot has made a big call on a Liverpool transfer ahead of the January transfer deadline.
Liverpool have made it clear that their priority this month is to keep the current squad. Slot even mentioned that he is happy with the players at his disposal. Despite rumours linking players away, and the threat of Saudi Pro League clubs, the Reds have managed to keep their best players.
Slot suffered his first defeat in the Champions League this season away to PSV. The Dutch coach rested about nine key players for the tie, taking a shot at UEFA in the process. He made it clear that with the upcoming games, it was the best decision to rest and rotate. Liverpool face Spurs, Bournemouth and Everton in the next few weeks.

Arne Slot makes decision on Liverpool transfer

Despite no additions in this transfer window, Liverpool have been working behind the scenes. Deals for fringe players and youngsters at the club are being worked on ahead of the deadline. A number of youth players featured in the 3-2 loss to PSV on Wednesday night. Jarrell Quansah, Conor Bradley, Jayden Danns, James McConnell and Tyler Morton all featured in the game.
After the game, reports came out that Morton could leave Liverpool this week. Arne Slot has also come out to say James McConnell will remain at Anfield, and not go out on loan:
“At the moment we have most of our players fit, so we will have this discussion tomorrow, me and Richard [Hughes], about these players,” said the Liverpool head coach.
“But there’s definitely one of them that will not go on loan, and I think you know which one I mean… James McConnell.”
“I wouldn’t say definitely but I liked him a lot today, so maybe the end result would be good to go somewhere and play but he’s also a player that hasn’t played much 90 minutes in the last six or seven months because he was injured for a while. He impressed me a lot today.”
Jayden Danns and James McConnell were attracting loan interest from Championship clubs, but Arne Slot’s statement could mean the 20-year old stays at Anfield this month.
Reds have unearthed another gem
After Jarrell Quansah and Conor Bradley made their way to the first team, James McConnell could now follow. The emergence of the teenager comes at a very important time. Since last summer, the club has been in the market for a midfielder. But giving McConnell a chance to grow into the team could once again save Liverpool a lot of money.
