Liverpool have made a rousing start to the season in the Premier League and are sitting at the top of the league table ahead of Manchester City and Arsenal.
The Reds had a frustrating summer transfer window and missed out on their top target in Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi who didn’t want to leave the Spanish club.
However, their issues in the transfer window have not affected their performances in the early part of the season and Ryan Gravenberch has stepped up to hold that deep midfield role.
But the Reds are already looking ahead and have been looking at players who could come in and make a real impact on the team in the coming seasons.
Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz is one of the players the club have been tracking with a view to potentially signing him next summer.
Liverpool at most have an ‘outside chance’ of signing the Bayer Leverkusen star
However, the race to sign the attacking midfielder is expected to be tougher than previously thought with several clubs chasing his signature.
Wirtz is expected to move on from the German champions next summer and according to German magazine SportBild, four clubs are leading the race to sign the player.
Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are the two European giants who have a real chance of signing him and Manchester City and Arsenal are the two Premier League clubs who are in the race as well.
Liverpool have been interested in Wirtz as well but it has been claimed that they only have an ‘outside chance’ of signing the attacking midfielder next summer.
Leverkusen are keen to get a fee of €150m from his sale but his suitors are looking at a deal worth around €100m as things stand.
It remains to be seen whether Slot and Liverpool’s recruitment team manage to get the Reds back into the race for the attacking midfielder in the coming months through performances on the pitch and a strong sales pitch.
