“Need to get that new contract sorted:” Liverpool told to get vital business done

Gabriel Agbonlahor says that Virgil van Dijk’s “Rolls Royce” performance against Manchester United needs to prompt Fenway Sports Group to offer the Dutch skipper to a new contract.

The 33-year-old is showing no signs of decline and seems to be at the very height of his powers. He dominated any Manchester United player that came near him in Liverpool’s 3-0 win at Old Trafford.

Now with his compatriots training for their UEFA Nations League fixtures against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Germany, van Dijk has been spoken about by Agbonlahor this week.

Agbonlahor urges Liverpool to tie van Dijk down to a fresh contract

According to Capology, van Dijk earns £220,000 per week but his contract expires at the end of the season just like Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

And as the club’s captain, Liverpool cannot let him leave for free. It would send a particularly poor message as it did in 2015 when Steven Gerrard left the club after FSG dragged their feet over offering him new terms.

Agbonlahor said on talkSPORT, via TBRF: “I thought Van Dijk was fantastic yesterday. I feel in the previous game, Konate shined maybe a bit more than him, but yesterday watching the game, I thought he was like a Rolls-Royce.

“Manchester United had no chance. Garnacho, Rashford, Zirkzee – no chance of getting past him.

“And he’s back to that sort of form that he had before his big knee injury with that clash with Pickford.

“And he really is a Rolls-Royce defender, coming out with the ball, is passing, and no one’s getting past him. Liverpool really need to get that new contract sorted.”

There isn’t a defender on the planet like van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk is the closest thing I’ve ever seen to the complete centre-back. He has everything you could possibly want.

He’s extremely tall, strong fast, has high football IQ, is aggressive, aerially adept and is even a threat in the opposition box.

Not only does he tick the box for every defensive trait needed for a top centre-back, but he’s also unparalleled with his ability on the ball.
