Explanation for Liverpool dawdling on £350k/week Mohamed Salah contract renewal

Mohamed Salah earns a reported £350,000 from his Liverpool contract but that may change as of next year depending on whether or not he is offered a new deal.

The Egyptian was in splendid form at Old Trafford on Sunday as Liverpool ran out 3-0 winners with Salah scoring once and assisting both of Luis Diaz’s goals.

However, his comments after the game attracted even more attention as he informed Sky Sports listeners of his expiring contract and a lack of an offer from FSG.

He said: “I was coming to the game, I was saying, ‘look, it could be the last time.

“Nobody in the club talked to me yet about contracts so I was just like, ‘OK, I play my last season and see at the end of the season’.

“I feel I am free to play football – we will see what happens next year.”

Now, reports are emerging that Liverpool will indeed open contract talks with Salah’s agent Ramy Abbas. Fabrizio Romano reported on Tuesday that Liverpool will hold talks in the next few months.

Now, Football Insider reports the same and has explained the lack of talks until this point is the result of FSG prioritising “bedding in” Arne Slot as the new manager and the new recruitment staff headed by Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes.

Now that they are accustomed to life at the club, Liverpool are set to open talks with Salah.

The Egyptian forward has been prolific for the Reds since he completed a £34 million move to Anfield from AS Roma in 2017. Salah has 214 goals and 92 assists for Liverpool.

He very quickly asserted himself as the best forward in the Premier League – a mantle that is still his and will continue to be his should he indeed sign a new deal to stay at the club.
