Liverpool have been told that it’s “critical” that they complete contract renewals for Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold with their expiring deals the main subject of discussion during the first international break of the season.
Former Scotland striker Ally McCoist believes extending the contracts of these star players is far more crucial than planning for future transfers.
The Reds made just one major signing during the summer, bringing in Federico Chiesa from Juventus for £12.5 million.
Despite this, McCoist argues that keeping Alexander-Arnold, van Dijk, and Salah at the club should be the main focus, as the trio could negotiate with foreign clubs starting in January, potentially leaving Liverpool with massive gaps to fill.
“It’s critical Liverpool sign Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander–Arnold and Virgil Van Dijk to new deals before the end of the season,” McCoist told talkSPORT BET.

He continued: “There is a cloud of uncertainty around the future of all their best players due to their contract situations and it needs clarification sooner rather than later.
“For me, Liverpool cannot allow their contracts to run down – the club will end up kissing goodbye to upwards of a quarter of a billion pounds in player value and three of the main players to turn the club into what it is today – that does not make business sense!”
McCoist also noted the need for clarity on the situation from Liverpool, with fans eager for updates regarding their top players. He stressed that even if these stars are not part of the long-term future, securing new contracts would ensure the club receives adequate compensation if they leave.
He continued: “As a Liverpool fan you’d want to know what’s going on with your best players and I’m sure the supporters will want some clarity on it. Ideally, you’d want all three to sign new deals – they’re irreplaceable for Liverpool.
“At the very least, getting them to sign a new contract means that the club will receive the money they are worth to them. They cannot be allowed to leave the club for nothing!”
Liverpool are working on extending all three players’ contracts but given that the trio earns an estimated total of £750,000 per week, it will take some time to complete.
