Liverpool tipped to tie down star defender to new deal

Liverpool have been working hard behind the scenes to tie down several of their top stars to new deals and those negotiations have formed the background score for their season thus far.

The Merseyside giants sit second in the Premier League table but the headlines around the club have been about the contract situations of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

The trio could leave the club on a free transfer next summer if talks do not progress with their representatives and Liverpool and that has been a reason for some consternation for the fans.

However, there are players in the Liverpool squad who deserve new deals because of their performances and the club are expected to table offers for them in the coming weeks.

Ibrahima Konate is one of the players who have looked fabulous under Arne Slot this season and is resembling the talent the club signed a few years back.

The Frenchman has benefited from Slot’s training sessions and style of football, which has allowed him to remain fit more consistently this season.

Konate has a little over 18 months left on his contract with the club and some are worried about him entering the final year of his deal next summer.

Liverpool want to tie him down to a new contract and there are suggestions that talks are underway between the club and his representatives.

However, the club are not expecting any complications over agreeing on a new deal with the Frenchman.

The Athletic’s James Pearce insisted that there are unlikely to be any issues in the negotiations between Liverpool and the defender’s agents.

He is fully expecting the Reds to tie down Konate on a new long-term contract in the coming weeks and months.

“We know that there’s obviously a lot of talk about contracts at the minute. We know that Konate has been in talks with the club about an extension”, Pearce said on Walk On podcast.

“I don’t think that there’ll be any problems on that front. I think he’s very happy where he is for Liverpool and it’s an absolute no-brainer to get him tied down for the best years of his career.”
