Liverpool suffer huge blow ahead of Paris Saint-Germain clash

Liverpool are in action in the Champions League midweek.

The reds were the best team in the new group phase format of the competition. Liverpool had a 100% record in their first seven games, conceding just two goals. Their only loss in the competition came in the last game against PSV. Arne Slot decided to rest key players, and the reds lost 3-2 in Holland. The decision paid off as the club still managed to finish top of the group stage standing, avoiding a playoff tie.

Liverpool are still in the hunt for a treble at the end of the season. It could have been a quadruple, but a shock defeat to Plymouth in the FA cup derailed the plans. The reds sit top of the Premier League with a 13-point lead, and are in the League Cup final next weekend.

To win three trophies this season, Arne Slot’s side need to get past Paris Saint-Germain over two legs.

The first leg will be in Paris, where Liverpool will be away from home. The reds face an in form Paris Saint-Germain side who have scored 21 goals in their last four games. Liverpool had a whole weekend to rest after their exit from the FA Cup in the previous round. PSG were in action against Lille on Saturday. Arne Slot will be hoping the extra rest can give his side the advantage.

Just over 24 hours before the game, Liverpool received a little scare. Cody Gakpo was not in training on Tuesday afternoon. This raised suspicions that the Dutch forward was possibly injured or picked up a knock before the session.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot has come out and explained Gakpo’s absence:

“He was close to being ready to play again but he felt a bit of pain after blocking a shot in training. We brought him with us and will make a decision tomorrow on if he can be involved. It will be a close call.”

The forward picked up a knock against Everton, and has been limited to substitute appearances over the last two games. Gakpo has been named in the travelling squad to Paris.

Good news for the reds

Losing one of your best attackers this season would have been a huge blow for Liverpool. Outside Mohamed Salah this season, the Dutch forward has been one of the only players to step up in the attack this season. He looks like one option Arne Slot would keep ahead of next year.

Liverpool are reportedly looking to add a big name striker in the summer.
