Liverpool stunned by Manchester United’s hijack of £80m midfielder

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes is set to trigger deals for several players in the coming weeks as he pushes to improve a title-winning squad. However, the competition for certain stars is stiff, and Manchester United have hijacked the Reds’ pursuit of a top midfielder.

Arne Slot turned Liverpool’s failure to sign a number 6 last summer into an opportunity and turned Ryan Gravenberch into an elite defensive midfielder this season.

However, the Liverpool manager wants at least one elite midfield signing as he wants more options to compete on multiple fronts in the 2025/26 campaign.

The Merseyside giants have been keeping tabs on several young midfielders, but one such player is now a top target for Manchester United as well, ahead of the summer transfer window.

Ruben Amorim is pushing Manchester United into the fray for a top Premier League midfielder

Adam Wharton is one of the talented young midfielders in the Premier League, and Crystal Palace will struggle to hold on to him this summer.

Liverpool have been in conversations to try and sign him and are keen to hold talks with Palace to secure a deal for his signature in the upcoming transfer window.

However, according to CaughtOffSide, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is a massive fan of the England international and wants him at Old Trafford ahead of next season.

He is driving Manchester United’s interest in Wharton, and is pushing the club to try and take him to Old Trafford in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Palace want to offer him a new deal to convince him to stay at Selhurst Park, but are aware interest from the Premier League bigwigs could be too hard to resist.

The Eagles want as much as £80m before agreeing to sanction his sale.
