Liverpool are in the market for defensive reinforcements as Arne Slot realises that some of his top defenders need to be replaced in the coming years. A centre-back is on their agenda, but they are now unlikely to sign a top target who has been on their wishlist this summer.
Virgil van Dijk has signed a new two-year contract, but Liverpool want to bring in his long-term replacement to Anfield while he is still playing at the top level.
The Merseyside giants are also worried about losing Ibrahima Konate, who has a year left on his contract, and has been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain and Saudi Arabia.
The Reds are confident of getting a deal done to sign Dean Huijsen, but they are now set to miss out on signing another top centre-back in the upcoming transfer window.

Top defender makes major transfer decision

The 25-year-old Nico Schlotterbeck has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.
Liverpool are among the clubs who are looking at the talented centre-back who has the game to slot into the Reds defence, and there are rumours Arne Slot admires the German.
However, according to Sport Bild via Fussball Transfers, the defender has indicated to Borussia Dortmund that he will sign a new contract with the club.
His current deal expires at the end of the season, but it seems the centre-back is happy to continue at the Westflalenstadion over seeking a transfer.
He is currently out injured, and the centre-back does not want to risk a transfer just ahead of next year’s World Cup, where he is expected to be a major part of Germany’s team.
Liverpool are likely to focus on other targets as they seek to bring in defensive solutions.
