Liverpool secure ₤41 million deal for Wolves forward Diogo Jota

After relatively swift negotiations with Wolves, Liverpool have officially signed Portuguese forward Diogo Jota.

The Reds paid ₤41 million for Jota, with the fee potentially rising to ₤45 million in add-ons. Liverpool have simultaneously sent young defender Ki-Jana Hoever in the opposite direction for ₤9.5 million, potentially rising to ₤13.5 million in add-ons.

Jota’s arrival comes the day after the confirmation of Thiago Alcantara’s signing from Bayern Munich. In what initially seemed to be a quiet transfer window for Jurgen Klopp’s side, the reigning champions have added two major pieces to their arsenal in a matter of 24 hours.

Jota has spent the last three years working under Nuno Esperito Santo at Wolves, becoming a key cog in an efficient attack alongside Raul Jimenez and Adama Traore.

Despite how important Jota has been for Wolves, the possibility of his sale became more likely following Wolves’ signings of Pedro Neto, Daniel Podence, and Fabio Silva in recent windows.

The 23-year old forward, who will wear the #20 for Liverpool, has scored 16 goals in 67 Premier League appearances the past two seasons. He also scored an impressive 9 goals in 14 Europa League outings last season.

On the international stage, he sports 4 caps to his name for Portugal, scoring his first goal for his country in a 4-1 victory over Croatia earlier this month.

However, similar to Roberto Firmino, the statistics don’t encapsulate Jota’s impact on the side. A versatile attacking player who prefers a second striker role but can also play as a lone #9 or on the wing, Jota thrives in linking play and serving as the first line of defence.

He also boasts neat footwork, deceptive pace, and able vision, making him a complete, multi-faceted forward.

Due to the congestion of the condensed season and the reliance on Liverpool’s front three in past seasons, it became a priority for Jurgen Klopp to upgrade his attacking options. Despite the potential financial ramifications of the coronavirus, Michael Edwards and co. decided that the deal was a worthy investment.

Fans have been calling for a new addition in the attack, and they have finally been awarded for their patience with the arrival of Jota.
