Liverpool are in the market for a defensive midfielder and it is not a secret anymore that the club will prioritise signing a new number six in the next summer transfer window.
A number six was a priority last summer as well but Liverpool didn’t believe there was a credible alternative available once Martin Zubimendi decided against leaving Real Sociedad.
There is a clamour among Liverpool fans to sign a midfielder in the winter window but the club are not expecting to do any major business unless a long-term target suddenly becomes available for a mid-season switch.

The French midfielder was wanted by Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool in 2022 but he opted to take up the offer to join Real Madrid for a deal worth €100m.
However, his time at Real Madrid has not panned out the way he would have hoped and he was recently whistled off the pitch by the fans in a 3-1 defeat against AC Milan.
Tchouameni is keen to leave Real Madrid at the end of the season and Liverpool have the green signal to try and sign him next summer.
The Reds are interested in the midfielder and believe he is being undervalued in Spain at the moment.
According to Defensa Central, Liverpool are planning to use their Champions League clash against Real Madrid later this month to move their interest forward.
