Liverpool lost their first match against Crystal Palace today, as the Reds lost their second match of the season. The Merseysiders’ first loss this season was also against the Eagles in English football’s curtain raiser, the FA Community Shield.
The Glaziers were led by Marc Guehi as the match ended 2-2. The winner was decided through penalties, where Palace shone at Wembley and managed to keep the Shield in London.
Their second face-off saw an early goal from Ismaïla Sarr in the 9th minute as Slot’s men struggled to capitalise on chances the whole game.
Finally, Federico Chiesa pulled one back for Liverpool in the 87th minute, giving the Reds hope. Arne Slot would’ve gone home with at least a point, but unfortunately, Eddie Nketiah had different plans.
Just as the Merseysiders had cruised on late winners till now, former Arsenal striker Nketiah decided to play the same game against the Reds.
He scored the winner during injury time, pushing Crystal Palace to second place in the Premier League table. Now, the Reds stand only three points clear of second-placed Eagles.

After losing Giovanni Leoni and Hugo Ekitike against Southampton, the depth issue has widened at Anfield. However, Slot says he still prefers a smaller and more united squad compared to his counterparts.
Talking about the future transfer, the Dutchman said that it highly depends on the injuries that will follow till January. It might seem risky, but that’s how Slot has built his teams till now.
“That all depends on whether we get more injuries, yes or no, and if there’s a chance in the market – all the answers I always give.”

The Dutchman’s preference for a smaller squad
Arne Slot also emphasised his preference for having a squad where every player gets justifiable game time, which isn’t possible with more players.
“I would not prefer to go to 24 or 25 players… I believe that every player needs to have a perspective on development or playing time. If I have to disappoint four or five players, I believe that is not the right energy that you want to have in the building.”
“That is the way we do it, and it is also why we can maybe spend a bit more on one player instead of bringing three in, and that is maybe the difference between the clubs.”
