Liverpool are actively looking at left-backs in the market as they push to bring in someone new next summer. However, the club remain committed to the idea of keeping Andy Robertson at Anfield.
Robertson is one of the stalwarts of the Liverpool side that won the Premier League and the Champions League under Jurgen Klopp and has been a great servant for the club.
However, he has been in and out of the team this season as Arne Slot has chosen to use Kostas Tsimikas more after Robertson missed pre-season due to an injury.
Liverpool are also keen to bring in a younger left-back next summer who could become the long-term replacement for the Scotland international and Milos Kerkez is one of their top targets.
However, Liverpool are also planning to open talks over a new deal with Robertson at the end of the season as they want him around at Anfield for longer.
The club desperate to keep Robertson
Despite Robertson’s diminishing powers and the club’s interest in signing a new left-back, Liverpool do not want to move on the player next summer.
Liverpool’s plans to offer him a new contract shows that Slot values Robertson’s experience and wants him in the dressing room in the coming years.
Experienced football observer Mick Brown conceded that it makes sense why Liverpool would want to keep the Scot as they do not want to lose his experience.
Can you name the team Liverpool sold these players to?
With players such as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah looking like leaving, he feels a player of Robertson’s experience must remain at Anfield.
Brown admitted from what he knows, the Reds are pushing hard to convince the left-back to sign a new contract.
“They want Robertson to commit to a new deal“, he told Football Insider.
“Tsimikas has been more involved this season and Slot likes to rotate those two, but they still feel he’s a valuable presence on and off the pitch.
“We’ve spoken about their priorities in terms of getting their best players tied down.
“But Robertson has gone under the radar in that respect.
“There are question marks about Van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold and Salah, now there are questions about Robertson, and all of a sudden they’re in serious trouble.
“Worst-case scenario, they lose all three of those three at the end of the season.
“Then, if Robertson leaves next year, that’s the majority of their leaders and big names gone.
“He’s been such an important player for them over the years, and even if his role is becoming less crucial, he would be a huge miss if he left.
“So from what I’ve heard, they’re desperate to get him tied down because they don’t want to risk being in that difficult situation where they’re losing their experiences heads.”
