Liverpool lead the way to complete major signing

Liverpool have been looking at left-backs as they continue to assess whether they need to bring in someone to replace Andy Robertson in the team in the long run.

Richard Hughes and his recruitment team have been assessing the Liverpool squad as they seek to decide on the positions they need to fill in the upcoming transfer windows.

While the Reds are looking at opportunities ahead of the winter window, the club are likely to do the bulk of their business in the summer and signing a left-back seems to be on their agenda.

Wolves’ Rayan Ait-Nouri and Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez are on their radar but Liverpool are also keen to offer Robertson a new contract at the end of the season.

Benfica’s Alvaro Carreras has also been linked with a move to Liverpool but Manchester United’s entry in the race has complicated matters for the Reds.

The Reds have the edge over Manchester United

Manchester United sold Carreras to Benfica last summer but Ruben Amorim, who took charge of the club this week, is open to taking him back to Old Trafford.

The Premier League giants have a €20m buyback clause but it won’t be a straightforward move as Liverpool remain in business for the left-back.

According to Correio da Manha, the Merseyside giants continue to lead the race to sign the defender from Benfica next summer.

Liverpool are seen as a more settled sporting project than Manchester United for Carreras at the moment.

However, the buyback is still an advantage for Manchester United if they can convince the defender to return to Old Trafford.

Liverpool, on the other hand, will have to pay the €50m release clause in his Benfica contract if they want to sign him,

But the Merseyside giants are leading the race and will have to make the call on whether they want to sign him at the end of the season.

Liverpool are looking at several left-backs and are still to decide their top target before they can start working on a deal to sign one of the names on their shortlist.
