Liverpool are in the hunt for a new striker and are likely to invest heavily in a forward as part of their plans to strengthen Arne Slot’s squad in the next summer transfer window.
Darwin Nunez has made just two starts in the Premier League and is increasingly looking like someone Arne Slot doesn’t trust to deliver the goods upfront.
The new Dutch boss has favoured Diogo Jota over Nunez despite the latter’s massive price tag and the Uruguayan is yet to prove that he can become a regular source of goals that a Liverpool number 9 needs to be.
Liverpool have been linked with an interest in Lille striker Jonathan David who will be available on a free transfer at the end of the season.
The Reds also have their eyes on Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta who has scored three times in the Premier League this season but remains highly-rated.
The club are also looking at options in Europe and it has been claimed that they have their eyes on a striker from the Portuguese top flight.
Liverpool set their sights on a Sporting Lisbon hitman
According to German broadcaster Sky Deutschland, Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres is someone the club are closely tracking at this stage of the season.
The former Coventry City striker has been a star in Portuguese football, scoring 57 times in 64 appearances for Sporting Lisbon, including 14 times in as many games this season.
Can you name the club Liverpool signed these players from?
Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City have also been keeping tabs on him and are interested in snaring the striker away from the Portuguese giants.
However, Sporting Lisbon have ruled out selling him in the winter window and are only likely to entertain offers for him in the summer.
Will he cost €100m?
Given his goalscoring exploits, it is almost certain the striker will move on from Sporting Lisbon at the end of the season.
He has a €100m release clause in his contract with the Portuguese giants but he is likely to cost a lot less than the figure.
It has been claimed that Sporting Lisbon are likely to listen to offers for him in the region of €60m to €70m next summer.
With Ruben Amorim tipped to become the next Manchester United boss, it would not be a surprise if Liverpool’s biggest domestic rivals also join the race for the Swede in the coming months.
