Liverpool have reached an agreement with Porto for Fabio Vieira and are now in a strong position to sign him should they choose to.
Luis Diaz joined the Reds in the summer and is already a fan favourite after helping his new teammates to two trophies within a few months of arriving at Anfield.
Not only has he won the League Cup and the FA Cup, but he has also helped Liverpool reach the Champions League final in Paris with his scintillating performances.
While he’s a box of tricks, he’s not a show pony. His skill and 1v1 ability have already converted in a tangible way for the Merseysiders and it’s safe to say he will prove to be a bargain over the next few seasons.
He has 6 goals and 4 assists for Liverpool since the start of February and has already provided a fine return on the £50m paid to sign him from Porto.
Crucially, the negotiations with Porto in January fostered a strong relationship and it appears as though Michael Edwards and Julian Ward have put that to good use.
According to The Sunday Mirror (15/05 page 77), Liverpool have reached an agreement with the Portuguese champions for Fabio Vieira.
They have first refusal on the 21-year-old this summer which means that should Porto receive any offers to sign him, they’re legally obliged to inform Liverpool and offer them the chance to sign him first.
The Merseysiders will have the opportunity to trigger his £12.7m release clause should another club attempt to do the same as Liverpool demonstrate, not for the first time, their superior transfer strategy.
Under Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool and FSG have advanced their approach to the transfer market and while there is still plenty of room to improve, the Reds have become famous for their transfer track record.
Diaz joining in January was just the first of several incredible signings that have been completed during Klopp’s tenure and I have no doubt that if Vieira was recruited in the summer, he’d follow in his former teammate’s footsteps.
