Wataru Endo has revealed an interesting request made by Liverpool’s staff during his time at the club.
The Japanese international, who hasn’t seen much playing time under new manager Arne Slot this season, has spent most of his minutes on the bench.
However, with Liverpool facing a busy schedule after the international break, his role could soon become more prominent.
Currently back in Japan for international duty, Endo is looking to regain match fitness before returning to Merseyside.
As captain of the Japanese national team, he was on media duties ahead of Japan’s game against China and shared some intriguing insights during a press conference.
Speaking to the Japanese media, Endo revealed that Liverpool staff had been asking for his opinion on various Japanese players, though not necessarily with the intention of signing them
. As reported by Soccer Digest, Endo said, “I get the impression that the evaluation of Japanese players who have transferred to England is gradually increasing.
“I think there is a lot of interest in Japanese players from all over the world. I am also asked by Liverpool staff about Japanese players, saying, ‘What about that guy? It’s not that we want to transfer him, but just that he’s a good player’, that kind of thing.”
Endo’s comments highlight a growing interest in Japanese talent across the football world, and Liverpool seems to be paying attention.
Since Endo became only the second Japanese player to represent the club, following Takumi Minamino, the Reds have reportedly monitored other Japanese stars.
Soccer Digest mentions that Liverpool have shown interest in players like Ko Itakura and Takefusa Kubo, although no moves materialised.
While nothing concrete has developed from Liverpool’s interest in these Japanese players, Endo’s role in providing insights suggests the club may continue to scout talent from Japan.
As Liverpool faces a demanding fixture list after the international break, Endo himself could play a more pivotal role moving forward.
