Fabrizio Romano: “Liverpool and Mo Salah will talk in the next days, weeks and months”

Liverpool are doing their best to ensure Mohamed Salah’s contract is extended. The Egyptian is under contract until the end of the season so the pressure is on to ensure he does not leave as a free agent next summer.

After scoring and assisting against Manchester United on Sunday, the forward said: “I was coming to the game today thinking it could be the last time. Nobody at the club has spoken to me yet about a new contract so I just play this last season and then see at the end of the season.

“It’s not up to me but nobody talk to me about a contract with the club. We’ll see.”

By way of explaining why Liverpool have been dawdling on extending Salah’s contract, domestic news outlet Football Insider reported this week that FSG prioritised “bedding in” Arne Slot, Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes.

Now, with the club’s hierarchy established after Jurgen Klopp’s departure, the owners are ready to offer Salah a new deal.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk are also set for contract talks, as they will be out of contract at the end of the season as well.

Writing in his Daily Briefing, Romano has shared all he knows about the status of Liverpool contract talks with Mohamed Salah.

“Mo Salah has been fantastic of late but a lot has been made of that recent interview,” the Italian writes.

“I came here guys to tell you again that it doesn’t mean that Mo Salah is 100% leaving Liverpool, but he’s waiting to have a conversation with the club. And this remains the point.

“I can confirm once again, that Liverpool and Mo Salah will talk in the next days, weeks and months. I can’t predict now how long the conversation will be, but there will be discussions around Mo Salah’s contract situation. The story isn’t over yet.

“At this point, it’s a possibility that he could leave as a free agent in the summer yes, but it’s not guaranteed at all because Liverpool want to talk to Salah, and Salah wants to talk to Liverpool.

“He’s very happy with the new project, with Arne Slot, the new directors and the new management but his situation is similar to Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold. These conversations will help to understand if Mo Salah and Liverpool can continue together in the future, or part ways.”
