Arne Slot and Co. had a fabulous summer transfer window, except for the Marc Guéhi saga, which ended in a last-minute pull-out by the player’s employers.
Guéhi was actually a critical piece of the puzzle for Slot this season, considering the departure of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen.
Quansah’s departure left significant questions regarding The Reds’ backline stability. With only three senior defenders to cover the central area, Slot may face problems if injuries arise.
The gaffer even announced their 2025/26 UEFA Champions League squad this evening. An interesting piece of information was the exclusion of Federico Chiesa from the List A group.
However, it was due to Rio Ngumoha taking one of the non-homegrown player slots. Rio didn’t qualify as a homegrown player, as it’s only been 2 years since the homegrown player clock started for the English teenager.
Marc Guéhi, on the other hand, would’ve easily qualified against the rule, not only adding another player to the squad but also bringing in defensive depth.
However, it looks like the Reds haven’t given up yet despite the transfer window being closed. The management has started planning to pursue the defender again in the January transfer window.

Arne Slot to go back for Marc Guéhi in January

According to Football Insider, the Reds have decided to target Guéhi for the upcoming January transfer window. The Crystal Palace captain had completed his medicals in London for a move to Anfield.
However, as The Eagles failed to sign a replacement for the Englishman, the offer sheets were rejected at Selhurst Park. Palace were hunting Brighton and Hove Albion defender Igor Julio.
The Glaziers decided to retain their captain after Brazilian defender Julio chose West Ham United as his next destination. Crystal manager Oliver Glasner threatened to walk away if the deal for Guéhi was signed.
“I told the chairman we have to keep Marc if we want to play a successful season. We have no chance to find the right replacement in one day. We all agreed that we just sell Marc if we have the right replacement in the building.”
“We wanted a replacement by 1 July. It is 31 August and we have no replacement. We have this agreement so it is clear from me. He is such a crucial player. He is one of our key players – he is our captain”
If Arne Slot manages to hold his ground with just three defenders till January, he might be in for a treat as another Premier League title will be in sight for the Dutchman.
