It’s no secret that Liverpool will be hunting for a defender in the upcoming transfer window. Following the sale of Jarell Quansah, the Reds were hoping to sign Marc Guehi in the summer.
Unfortunately for the Merseyside outfit, the transfer of Guehi from Crystal Palace fell through in the final hours of deadline day.
The Reds were left with only four centre-backs. However, things didn’t stop there, as summer arrival Giovanni Leoni suffered a season-ending injury on his debut.
Ibrahima Konate’s contract expires at the end of the season, and Real Madrid are keenly following the situation despite ongoing renewal talks.
Arne Slot is hoping to sign Guehi in the upcoming summer, but another interesting option has caught the club’s eye. Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck seems to be on the Reds’ radar again.

With top clubs trying to hunt their star man, Dortmund isn’t sitting back with their hands folded. Schlotterbeck’s contract expires at the end of the 2026-27 season, with Bayern Munich also being one of the suitors in the bunch.
German media outlet Bild now reports that BVB are planning to keep the defender till his contract expiration date. The German giants are in no hurry to avoid looking desperate.
The outlet reports that Dortmund thinks this will help the club look stronger while they try to play to the defender’s “emotions” to get the desired outcome.
Sky Sports correspondent Florian Plettenberg previously reported that Bayern had made their inquiry, displaying interest in the defender’s services.
“FC Bayern have made an enquiry about Nico Schlotterbeck and have expressed their interest, should he decide not to extend his contract, as revealed last week. Nothing more has happened at this stage.”

How will Joe Gomez’s situation affect transfer dynamics?
Joe Gomez is one of the three centre-backs still standing at Anfield. The Englishman’s role, however, isn’t clear in the long term under Slot.
Interest from AC Milan in the summer was a big theme, but the Reds didn’t sell him as no backup was ready to take his place. Guehi’s transfer would’ve changed that, but despite the failure, the Italian giants have launched a new mission to sign the defender.
With Leoni out and Konate’s potential departure, Schlotterbeck might become a great second option for the Reds after they manage to sign Guehi for free.
