Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is reportedly expected to leave Anfield at the end of this season, according to James Pearce on *The Athletic’s Walk On podcast.
Despite Liverpool’s solid performances on the field and their current run in the Premier League, off-field matters regarding player contracts are drawing attention, particularly Kelleher’s future at the club.
Kelleher, widely regarded as a ‘world-class’ talent, has been a dependable backup to Alisson Becker but is now seeking regular first-team football.
The 24-year-old has expressed his desire to become a first-choice goalkeeper, stating that his current role at Liverpool, where he is primarily a backup, is not ideal for his ambitions.
He made it clear that playing week in, week out is his priority, whether at Liverpool or elsewhere.
During the summer transfer window, Nottingham Forest showed interest in signing Kelleher, reportedly offering £7 million plus Matt Turner. However, Liverpool rejected the bid, as it fell far short of their £25-30 million valuation of the Irish goalkeeper.
Pearce mentioned that Forest later returned with a slightly improved offer, but it was still insufficient for the Reds, who saw no benefit in accepting such a deal.
Pearce’s comments suggest that despite Liverpool’s reluctance to part with Kelleher at a lower price, this season could be his last at Anfield. With the 2023/24 campaign underway, there appears to be a growing sense that Kelleher will move on to seek the first-team opportunities he craves, which have been limited due to Alisson’s status as the club’s number one.
Kelleher’s departure would end his long tenure at the club, having made several key contributions, including his performances in cup competitions. With his contract situation uncertain, it remains to be seen whether the goalkeeper will sign a new deal or seek a move to secure regular game time.
