Liverpool are making plans to change the first team squad this summer.
The reds have had a quiet window over the past year. Since Arne Slot arrived, the club have made just two permanent additions to the first team. Federico Chiesa joined from Juventus on a cut price deal. The Italian international has not featured much as he was out due to injury. He only returned to the team in December. Liverpool also signed Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia. The Georgian international was signed off a great EURO 2024 campaign. The reds signed him and loaned him back to the Spanish side for the rest of the season.

Liverpool deal for midfield star fails

It seems like the reds have highlighted midfield as an area they need to strengthen. Liverpool have been linked with moves to Joshua Kimmich, and Frenkie de Jong in recent weeks. Arne Slot has used Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch for most of the season, preferring the duo to Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliot.
A report from Milan Live a few weeks ago suggested that Liverpool had lined up a sensational swap deal. The reds were ready to send Federico Chiesa to Milan in exchange for midfielder Tijjani Reijnders. Slot is reportedly a big fan of the Dutch midfielder.
As of this week, the deal might be over. It has been reported by Fabrizio Romano that Milan are set to announce a new two-year extension for the midfielder soon. Reijnders joined the Serie A side in 2023 on a five-year contract. His performances over the last year has pushed the club to tie him down long-term.

This new contract extension now probably rules out any future deals involving the midfielder.
Reds have to move for another target
Now that the Milan star has signed a new deal with his club, Liverpool will now have to move on to other targets. This summer is shaping up to be a pivotal one for the club. The reds could end this season with silverware in Arne Slot’s first season. What is more important is what happens next.
This Liverpool squad has lost a lot of key players over the past few years. If the club want to challenge for trophies under Slot in the near future, they will need to add more quality additions.
