Our view: Liverpool could soon complete surprise back to back double signing

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 18: (THE SUN OUT, THE SUN ON SUNDAY OUT) Thiago Alcantara new signing of Liverpool at Anfield on September 18, 2020 in Liverpool, England.

With Liverpool’s bid for Federico Chiesa real, it looks as though the Reds are moving up a gear and could soon announce a special signing.

Repubblica first reported that Liverpool had made an offer to sign the European Championship winner and now Florian Plettenberg has corroborated this to LFC Transfer Room.

Things have gone suspiciously quiet around the club in a way very similar to how they did just before they announced deals to sign Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota days after each other.

The Spaniard was linked with a move to Liverpool for months and local journalists constantly rejected the notion of him joining the club.

His injury record, age, high wages and high profile were all cited as factors for why FSG would never consider him as a target.

In many ways, he bears a striking resemblance as a target for Liverpool Football Club to Saul. The main difference is his age and price tag.

The Atletico Madrid star will cost almost double the fee and is four years his junior but still, Merseyside journalists say there is no chance he will join the club.

And they may well be right. Manchester United can offer much higher wages and a guaranteed starting role in the middle of the park.

Yet, the lure of working with Jurgen Klopp over Ole Gunnar Solksjaer will surely be playing on Saul’s mind if reports are true and Liverpool are in talks with his agent over bringing him to Anfield.

Last summer, Liverpool announced Thiago Alcantara on the 18th of September before unveiling Diogo Jota as a Red a day later on the 19th.

The Portuguese was hardly linked with the club all summer and with Donyell Malen and Patson Daka both out of the picture, I can’t help but feel like Liverpool are set for another double signing of this nature.

It would once again prove to supporters why we should always save judgement for the end of the summer as Michael Edwards is yet to fail us.

However, with the clock ticking, the pressure is on the Liverpool sporting director to deliver the goods.
