Antoine Semenyo latest: Liverpool could prompt January bid

The Semenyo saga has taken a new turn as Liverpool have jumped back into the race to sign Bournemouth’s highly rated forward.

Liverpool could be poised for a dramatic late entry into the race for Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo. Despite widespread reports that the player is closing in on a move to Manchester City, whispers from the south coast suggest the Reds remain a genuine threat.

Semenyo’s explosive form this season, netting nine Premier League goals, has triggered his £65 million release clause. This clause becomes active on January 1st and expires just ten days later, creating a narrow window for business.

While Pep Guardiola’s side have moved decisively, making formal club-to-club contact and engaging the player’s representatives, Bournemouth are reportedly bracing for a twist.

Liverpool have an inside man in the Semenyo transfer

The connection to Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, adds an intriguing twist. Hughes was instrumental in bringing Antonio Semenyo to Bournemouth from Bristol City for £12 million in 2023. His knowledge of the player and the club’s structure could facilitate a swift move if Liverpool decide to act. However, as things stand, Manchester City are the favourite to sign Semenyo.

What does Semenyo want?

For the player, the decision is nuanced. It is understood that Semenyo views City as a preferred destination, drawn by the project under Guardiola, who has previously hailed him as an “extraordinary player.”

However, the prospect of more immediate playing time at Anfield, especially with Mohamed Salah at AFCON and Alexander Isak injured, could be a factor. Sources indicate he wants his future resolved swiftly, prioritising a club where he can compete for major honours.[smartframe_images_embed customer-id=”04742eb90cefa12a5e3ab9bae92c2b93″ image-id=”neimP2Wiqu2X” style=”width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5712px; aspect-ratio: 5712/3808;”]

From Bournemouth’s perspective, there is a preference to keep Semenyo for crucial early-January fixtures against Arsenal and Tottenham before sanctioning a sale. This detail could open a door for any club willing to structure a deal accordingly.

While Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham have also enquired, the battle appears to be between the Reds and Manchester City. Liverpool’s interest is long-standing but has yet to materialise into a formal bid.

The coming days will reveal if Hughes and Arne Slot choose to challenge City directly, turning up the heat in what promises to be a pivotal January transfer saga.
