Harvey Elliott loan set for early end as Aston Villa seek exit

Harvey Elliot for Liverpool

Harvey Elliott joined Aston Villa on a season long loan. However, his minutes have dried up severely under Unai Emery. The midfielder is at a crossroads of continuing at Aston Villa or returning to Liverpool.

Harvey Elliott’s disappointing spell at Aston Villa appears headed for an early conclusion. The attacking midfielder, who joined Villa on a season-long loan from Liverpool last summer, has become an unexpected casualty of Unai Emery’s tactical plans, sparking negotiations between the two clubs.

The move, which included an obligation for Villa to buy for around £35 million if Elliott made 10 appearances, has stalled dramatically.[smartframe_images_embed customer-id=”1ffbae35d432d0d71911ca2a0b209fbb” image-id=”prsiisaxOyjE” style=”width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2700px; aspect-ratio: 2700/1514;”]

The 22-year-old has managed just five outings totaling 97 Premier League minutes and has been omitted from the squad for ten consecutive matches. It’s a stark contrast to his summer form, where he shone as Player of the Tournament in England’s Under-21 European Championship win.

New agreement for Elliot at Aston Villa

With the situation untenable, Villa are now keen to cancel the loan agreement. However, the path to an early return is not straightforward. According to The Athletic, the loan deal does not contain a standard recall clause for Liverpool. This means Aston Villa “would have to pay to terminate the loan” early, prompting discussions to “broker a new agreement.”

Elliot’s complex situation at Aston Villa

Further complicating matters are FIFA regulations. Having already played for both Liverpool and Aston Villa this season, Elliott is prohibited from registering for a third club.

His options are therefore binary: sit out the season unused at Villa Park or return to his parent club. Both options seemingly have very limited minutes for him.[smartframe_images_embed customer-id=”b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf” image-id=”WmOB1jFrnVLf” style=”width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4198px; aspect-ratio: 4198/2799;”]

Villa manager Unai Emery has addressed the difficult situation, stating, “Hopefully we can get the best for him and the best for us. I respect him as a player and as a person. He is training well, but we have one circumstance with him.”

Why a recall at Liverpool for Harvey Elliot?

For Liverpool, a recall could inadvertently solve a short-term squad issue. With Mohamed Salah at the Africa Cup of Nations and Alexander Isak injured, attacking depth is reduced. Elliott’s versatility offers a useful option for Arne Slot, even if his long-term future at Anfield remains uncertain. The coming weeks will center on finding a financial compromise, potentially bringing a frustrating chapter for the player to a close.
