Liverpool claim Marc Guéhi interest is just noise (Credits: Imago Images)
Despite breaking the British record by signing Swedish international Alexander Isak, Marc Guéhi stood out more on deadline day due to a failed transfer attempt.
Liverpool had been following the defender’s situation throughout the summer. This was because they had only three senior centre-backs left in their squad.
Jarell Quansah left for Bayer Leverkusen on the 2nd of July for five years. The transfer cost the German club £30m with possible £5m add-ons.
However, an important nuance in the transfer remained the buy-back clause included by Liverpool. The Reds can sign the defender back in the future during a pre-set period and price.
Despite that, the club needed a defender right now, and Guéhi was the perfect candidate. The Crystal Palace captain would’ve provided the depth that Arne Slot needed in the back.
Unfortunately, in the closing hours of the transfer window, the deal fell through. The Palace captain had completed his medicals at Liverpool’s London office, but the final offer sheet was rejected.
The decision to sell the defender led to some internal strife at Selhurst Park. Not ready with a backup, Austrian manager Oliver Glasner threatened to walk away if their captain was sold.

Non-Liverpool interest is noise, say sources close to the club

Despite the failure, the club is confident in signing Marc Guéhi during the next summer transfer window. With only one season left on the Palace contract, Liverpool will be able to get a world-class defender for free.
Although the situation isn’t without roadblocks, as sources suggest, there are other clubs that also fancy the defender as early as January.
Real Madrid was reported to be interested, but according to Caught Offside, sources close to the media house claim that any interest from other clubs is just noise.
Caught Offside also mentioned that Liverpool were confident in signing the defender next summer despite potential competition.
Madrid are also interested in signing Ibrahima Konaté, as renewal talks have been for nought with the Reds. Arne Slot will be pushing for a transfer in January, as the Dutchman wouldn’t want to let the Frenchman leave for free.
Despite the potential transfer of Konaté in January, Liverpool seem adamant on going for Guéhi in the summer. This might prove to be problematic for Slot, considering Joe Gomez’s injury history and Giovanni Leoni’s inexperience.
