Liverpool should not be disappointed about missing out on £59 million signing

Liverpool fans might have felt a twinge of disappointment seeing Leny Yoro in Manchester United colours, especially considering the Reds’ interest in the young defender before his £59 million move to Old Trafford.

But as Federico Chiesa watched Liverpool dominate United from the directors’ box, any lingering regret over missing out on Yoro quickly faded.

Liverpool’s 3-0 victory was everything fans would have wanted this side to be doing this early in the season under Arne Slot. The Dutchman has won many supporters over with the exciting but defensively sound football on show.

While Yoro sat sidelined in a protective boot, Liverpool’s defence, anchored by Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté, was rock solid, securing their third consecutive clean sheet this season.

Yoro’s move to United may have raised some eyebrows, especially with rumours that Real Madrid was his expected destination. But Liverpool’s decision not to pursue the 18-year-old more aggressively now seems justified.

The Reds’ interest was more opportunistic than essential, especially given the current strength of their defence. The French centre-back was likely also demanding a guaranteed spot in the starting lineup and based on United’s performance, he was needed.

Moreover, Liverpool’s defensive depth is nothing to scoff at. Jarell Quansah’s rise, Joe Gomez’s continued presence, and the team’s overall defensive solidity have validated the club’s decision not to break the bank for Yoro.

Despite some concerns over Konaté’s injury history and Gomez’s limited starts, Liverpool’s backline has proven itself capable, making the decision to pass on Yoro even more understandable.

In the end, missing out on Yoro hasn’t hurt Liverpool. Slot’s men are firing on all cylinders, and with Chiesa eagerly awaiting his debut, the Reds look more than ready to continue their charge this season.

Chiesa will remain on Merseyside for the duration of the international break after Italy manager Luciano Spalletti made the decision to allow him to stay in Liverpool on the basis that he was going to be starting as is.

“Chiesa and I spoke and made a fair assessment,” Spalletti said, via Football Italia. “I would have brought him as an extra player, not participating in the games. He told me that he had spoken to his new club and that he needs to do specific preparation work with them.”
