Liverpool will look to secure their spot at the top of the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The Reds have surprised everyone this season, with Arne Slot leading his side to the top of the Premier League and Champions League. Coming into the season, no one really rated Liverpool as title contenders following the departure of Jurgen Klopp.
However, Arne Slot has done a brilliant job so far in his first season. His best quality has been bringing out production from players who failed to shine last season. The likes of Ryan Gravenberch, Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz have found their feet and have been key to this season.

Ahead of Wednesday night, Liverpool have the chance to go unbeaten throughout the new group phase. The Reds have a 100% record ahead of their game against PSV. Arne Slot has already made a big call to rest key players ahead of the game. Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konate, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Luis Diaz have been rested.
When asked about his decision to rest key players, Slot had some interesting things to say about the Champions League this season:
”It has taken me a while to understand this new format but I’m now 100 per cent sure it doesn’t matter if you end up first or second.
”Because we are guaranteed to play the team that is 15th, 16th, 17th or 18th, and then it’s down to the draw.
”We can’t drop to third. It has no impact on the league table but we will be trying to win. A wise man once said to me he’s never seen anything good come from losing a game.”
The Dutch coach also added that because of this, he would rather use Wednesday nights game to rotate and keep the team fresh.
”My squad is a choice for the long-term. The (fringe players) do not need to prove themselves, we know what their quality is, but we are playing many, many games and the ones we left behind could have played but we need to think long-term. Help them get their freshness back.”
Arne Slot is right
Before this year’s new Champions League format, a lot of players, coaches and fans voiced their displeasure at the number of games added. Now that we are almost done with this group phase, their concerns seem to have been justified. Arne Slot is totally right to rotate his team ahead of Wednesday night, as there are more important games ahead.
