Liverpool are reportedly considering a move for Bayern Munich’s Leroy Sane, with manager Arne Slot identifying the winger as a strong candidate to replace Mohamed Salah if he departs.
Salah, who has been one of Liverpool’s greatest-ever signings, could leave the club after his contract expires at the end of the current season. That is, if Liverpool don’t successfully extend his terms beyond his contract’s June 2025 expiration date.
Salah has already cemented his place in Liverpool’s history with 214 goals, putting him among the club’s top-five all-time scorers.
While many believe that Salah will eventually renew his contract, the club is preparing for the worst-case scenario.
According to Football Insider, Slot is keeping tabs on Sane.
With Sane’s contract expiring next summer, Liverpool could potentially negotiate a pre-contract deal or arrange a low-cost transfer to bring the former Manchester City winger to Anfield in the winter window.
Sane’s future at Bayern Munich in question
Leroy Sane, who has been impressive during his time at Bayern Munich, might be on the move.
The German international boasts 48 goals and 50 assists in 175 appearances for the Bavarian giants, numbers that rival Salah’s stats at Liverpool.
However, competition for Sane’s signature is expected to be fierce, with Premier League clubs like Arsenal and Newcastle also linked to him.
Despite showing interest in extending his stay at Bayern, ongoing contract negotiations seem to have hit a snag. Bayern reportedly offered Sane a reduction in his current £326,900-a-week wages, which has not been well-received.
This development, coupled with Bayern’s decision to focus on offering a significant pay rise to younger stars like Jamal Musiala, could open the door for a potential Premier League return for Sane.
If Bayern is unwilling to meet Sane’s contract demands, Liverpool may have a golden opportunity to secure his services in January.
A move back to England could be appealing for Sane, especially if talks with Bayern break down completely.
This makes Sane a prime target for the Reds as they look to safeguard their attacking options in the event Salah chooses to move on.
