Liverpool’s summer transfer window was filled with speculation, with fans growing increasingly frustrated as other Premier League clubs secured new signings while the Reds appeared inactive.
One of the key areas Liverpool needed to address was the defensive midfield position, especially after failing to secure Martin Zubimendi.
As time passed, the club explored the free agent market and reportedly showed interest in French midfielder Adrien Rabiot.
However, the opportunity to sign him has now slipped away.
Rabiot chooses Marseille over Liverpool
Adrien Rabiot, who had left Juventus after making 35 appearances last season, was rumoured to be a potential target for Liverpool.
However, it has been officially confirmed that the French international has signed with Olympique de Marseille.
The club announced: “Olympique de Marseille has reached an agreement in principle with Adrien Rabiot for the arrival of the French international midfielder, pending his medical examination.”
While Rabiot could have been a valuable addition to Liverpool, particularly in the defensive midfield role, his wage demands were reportedly too high.
The deal would have cost Liverpool over €40 million in wages across three seasons, making him the second-highest-paid player at the club.
Although Rabiot had the potential to fill the number six role effectively, his signing was ultimately too costly for the Reds.
With the emergence of Ryan Gravenberch, who has been performing well in the defensive midfield position, Liverpool may see this missed opportunity as a blessing in disguise. Gravenberch’s form could solidify his place in the squad and make up for the failed pursuit of Rabiot.
