Report: Klopp requests £66.6m midfielder – German is “convinced he would be a key signing” for Liverpool

Federico Valverde

Liverpool are interested in signing Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde in order to capitalise on his lack of game time in recent weeks, a claim from Spain suggests.

The Reds’ downfall this season has been their lack of depth in the middle of the park when key players have been absent but now with Thiago and Naby Keita fit, Jürgen Klopp is spoilt for choice.

The German actually has a full squad available to him for the most important month of the season although there are still many fans who believe it was a massive mistake not to replace Georginio Wijnaldum.

Jurgen Klopp and Georginio Wijnaldum

Liverpool signing a new central midfielder would likely indicate a departure as Klopp’s squad is very strong when it’s fully fit and so it’s more a question of how long can he keep his squad fit for?

Liverpool interested in Valverde’s situation as lack of game time proves an issue

The Uruguayan starred for Los Blancos on Wednesday evening as Real Madrid beat Chelsea 3-1 at Stamford Bridge.

That means the Blues have conceded 7 goals in their last 2 games after Brentford humbled them in the Premier League.

Toni Kroos and Karim Benzema

Valverde played 86 minutes of the game for Carlo Ancelotti’s side and his energy and counter-pressing were impressive which would be fantastic attributes in Klopp’s side.

El Nacional states that although Valverde has been included with more regularity of late, if he doesn’t continue playing regularly then the midfielder will “seriously consider” leaving the club.

He’s happy and comfortable in Madrid but will not remain at the club “under current conditions” while Liverpool are very keen to recruit the 23-year-old.

The report claims that  “Klopp is convinced he would be a key signing” as his style of play is perfect for the South American who suits “the pace of the Premier League.”

The Liverpool board has supposedly been asked to secure his signature by Klopp, which would reportedly cost in the region of €80 million (£66.6m).

Who would leave if Valverde were to sign for the Reds this summer?

This is a loaded question and certainly one for an entire article but it really depends on the remainder of the season.

Naby Keita

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has fallen out of favour recently while Naby Keita seems to be above him in the pecking order even in spite of his injuries so there’s an obvious preference from the coaching staff.

James Milner has been offered a one-year extension by the club and so is likely to remain for another season so it’s between the Ox and Naby I’d say but a likely scenario is that both stay and a new midfielder isn’t signed at all.
