Liverpool ready to make move to sign delightful playmaker that could hand them keys to Premier League title

Phillipe Coutinho.

Liverpool’s squad still lacks a midfield playmaker after Philippe Coutinho’s record-setting departure in 2018 and re-signing him would give Jurgen Klopp a new option.

When the little Brazilian joined Barcelona, I’ll admit that I was heartbroken. He was my favourite player and when he Coutinho scored on his debut against Swansea City in 2013, it was obvious to me he was going to be a fantastic player.

I don’t think anyone expected him to turn into the best-attacking midfielder in the world and for six months, under Jurgen Klopp’s guidance, he was just that.

He scored 21 goals and assisted 15 in the 2017/15 season, with 10 goals and 10 assists coming for Liverpool.

It’s a pity we never got to see him play with the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and Alisson Becker but you can argue that without his massive transfer fee, they might never have joined the club.

A suggestion was made at the start of the week by Spanish outlet SPORT that Coutinho could join Newcastle United, with the Magpies now the richest Premier League club after their takeover.

They certainly have the money to sign him now and could sell him their vision but it would appear, at least according to El Chiringuito TV that the Reds are ready to make a move to bring him back to Anfield and the Brazilian wants the reunion to happen.

He would need to accept that he is not a guaranteed starter at Liverpool but if he can regain his fitness after the meniscus injury he suffered last season and refind the form which earned him the move to Barcelona in the first place, he could force Klopp to start him.

I doubt that Liverpool are genuinely interested in bringing the player back due to him being nearly 30 but if he does return, it would give Liverpool more of the unexpected and only serve to improve the squad and raise the competitiveness.

He’s certainly not a like for like swap but he could take Georginio Wijnaldum’s place in the middle of the park and play as an advanced 8 when midfield depth is thin and when the engine room is well stocked, he could play off the left of the front three or as a false nine as we saw him do on occasion for the Reds.

It’s something of a fantasy move to consider for supporters but despite the way he left the club I think many fans would take him back.
